Encrypted and Secure POS/Business Software Data

When you are moving files from point “A” to point “B” and being stored in Point “C”, you are vulnerable for a breach, unless you have secured every data access point.

All sensitive data is stored encrypted in ProphetLine and Internet credit/debit card processing is PCI DSS secure.  Our customers are offered secure FTP multi store communications at no additional charge.  We also offer networked workstations that can go off-site and re-sync to the server after doing that remote show, which eliminates the security problem.

The next time you put the nude selfie in the cloud and it’s hacked, you can blame it on cousin Eddie, but where your business data is stored is your issue and no one else

Business Analytics Mean Good Inventory Control

Posted by

An easy way to improve your retail business is to do a department/class comparative that gives you the percentage of inventory in each department and the contribution of that department to the overall revenues of the business.

If twenty percent of your inventory is in department “A”, but it only contributes ten percent to the overall revenue, you have a problem which can easily be corrected.

All of that information should go to your open-to-buy plan and you can then make the adjustments necessary for future purchasing. You now have a road map to make good decisions on how much inventory should be in each department.  You will also need to go to your retail stock ledger and review which vendors perform well with good turns, robust sell through and good cumulative gross profits.

Those bad performing vendors can be approached should be willing to negotiate improved pricing or better terms.  If this sounds like a lot of work, it’s not with a totally automated retail system and only requires you to look at this information occasionally.  Being a busy specialty retailer that wears many hats, you can appreciate the ease of use and precise reporting.

ProphetLine allows you to do what you do best, sell your products without having the hassles of being a technical guru.

Partners in Data Security for Small Retailers

ProphetLine and MercuryPay are your Security Partners.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has warned retailers to harden their defenses against cyber-heists – particularly those that latch onto credit card details from shoppers, as apparently happened to Target and more large retailers.

It should be comforting for you to know that ProphetLine and Mercury Payment Systems are your partners in data security for small retailers.  You have better security than the big retailers at no cost to you.  Everything for security and encryption is built into the credit, debit and gift card functionality.  The only thing you pay is the normal merchant service fees, which are extremely low with Mercury.  This should be one of the major points of your buying decision for new POS/Retail Software. Can you really afford the penalties, fines and customer dissatisfaction if you are not totally secure?

ProphetLine vs Entry-Level Point of Sale Software

I am asked sometimes how we compare to Entry-Level POS software and the question should be how can an entry level Point of Sale System compare to ProphetLine.  Short answer is, It Can’t.   ProphetLine is the POS/Premium Merchandising Software with easy to understand department/class comparatives, vendor comparatives and built in open-to-buy planning.  ProphetLine has developed software for many Fortune 500 companies, but we specialize in providing small specialty retailers with high quality, inexpensive software that enables them to compete and beat larger retailers. If you are a busy specialty retailer that wears many hats, you can appreciate the ease of use and precise reporting.  ProphetLine allows you to do what you do best, sell your products without having the hassles of being a technical guru.  ProphetLine promotes good business practices and rewards good business people. We have all the features you would expect in a quality retail management system, without all the import/export, “integration” and other technical procedures.  ProphetLine is truly a high performance all-in-one retail solution that makes technology simple, including point of sale, small business financials, inventory, e-commerce and customer marketing in one all-inclusive package.  ProphetLine was the World’s first specialty retail Windows application and a four time winner of the Microsoft Retail Developer of the Year Award.

Mobile POS Devices are Vulnerable to Attack

Posted by
Mobile Point of Sale (MPOS) devices can be easily hacked, leaving banks, retailers and millions of customers exposed to serious fraud around the world, global information security firm MWR InfoSecurity has revealed at the SyScan security conference in Singapore.
Security researchers from MWR Labs, the research arm of the company, who in 2012 revealed critical vulnerabilities in Chip-and-Pin devices, demonstrated at the conference that it is possible to compromise MPOS terminals with multiple attacking techniques using micro USBs, Bluetooth and a malicious programmable smart card.
“What we have found reveals that criminals can compromise the MPOS payment terminal and get full control over it. This would allow an attacker to gather PIN and credit card data, and event change the software on the device so that it accepts illegitimate payments,” says Jon, Head of research at MWR InfoSecurity. “This shows that card holders paying at MPOS terminals worldwide are potentially at risk. Banks and retailers should also be wary when implementing this technology as it could leave them open to serious fraud.”

Storms in the Cloud

The cloud is much like using a WAN (wide area network) or VPN (virtual private network).  Everything is connected and just seems to work.  The problem comes when things stop working.

‘What if’ your internet (or connection) goes down?  This could be due to a provider issue, a router, a switch, a cable in or outside the business, or construction cutting wires.  The thing is it happens.  If you are using the cloud, what happens to your business ability to enter transactions?  There is always a point of failure which at some point will stop applications.

ProphetLine POS Software has a local database on a terminal in your business.  If your internet goes down, it could stop functions which rely on it such as credit card processing, but it does not stop you from assisting your customers.  In this case, the only point of failure will be the terminal with the data.  If this computer ‘dies’, ProphetLine will stop working.  Since your data is kept local, however, we can help you move the data to another terminal and have you back up and running in very little time.  You are in control of the time frame, not some outside force telling you ‘we are working on it’.

The other ‘draw’ of ‘the cloud’ is real-time data.  When I am asked about real-time data, my first question is usually what do you need to have in real-time?  Reports?  Inventory counts?  ProphetLine can sync data in user defined time increments.  This could be every 5 minutes to once a day, but most people find they only really need data certain times during the day not in real-time.

This can be had with ProphetLine.  But even then, if the quantity on-hand is an hour old, does it matter?  If you show 1 on-hand at another location in real-time or with it being data that is an hour old what are you going to do?  You will most likely call the other location, verify the quantity and have them hold the item for the customer.  Real-time is still not needed.

Duck Dynasty and Windows XP. One of them needs to go and it’s not the beards.

They are both very popular and loved by millions.  The difference – Duck Dynasty gives great straight up advice that is useful and promotes a better world.  Windows XP leaves you and your customers at risk for data loss, identity thief and lots of heartache.

First let me say I too, love Windows XP.  I still have a virtual machine running Windows XP for some of those programs that just don’t work on newer operating systems due to the manufacturer not keeping them up to date or going out of business, however, it should not be used for any computer with sensitive data.

Why?  Let’s look at it like this.  Windows XP was released toward the end of 2001, in computer years this is centuries ago, and is the most popular version of Windows.  The problem with this is hackers have had 12+ years to find ways to get data off computers running Windows XP and it is a favored OS by hackers, due to Microsoft not releasing any more service packs and soon no longer releasing any more security fixes.  In all honestly, I feel Microsoft will extend the release of security patches a bit longer, but not forever.

Let’s make this a bit more personal.  You want and expect your identity to be kept safe and secure by any company you are doing business with.  Would you rather they protect it with 12 year old software that has not been updated in roughly 4 years (service pack 3 was around 2008) or would you want them to use more current, up to date software which is being actively developed and patched?

Hackers love Windows XP too.  They love it for the same reason duck hunters like a shotgun (also known as a scatter gun).  One bullet, lots of shots, better chance of hitting something.  One virus program, lots of Windows XP users, better chance of getting in to steal some data.

As much as we love Windows XP, let’s at least treat our customers as we would want to be treated and upgrade to Windows 8.  Windows 8 is a great OS despite all the bad press.  It is a bit of a learning curve especially if you are migrating from XP, however, it is worth the move for you and your customers peace of mind.  I would recommend, you verify your hardware and business critical programs work with Windows 8.  There may also be some other changes needed if you are still clinging to old hardware and software.

Merchandising/POS Software-Mobile and Secure, On or Off Premise

ProphetLine was doing Cloud Computing before there was a Cloud. We came out with our first thin client product in 1996, an Application Service Provider (ASP) Model.

The first implementation of The ProphetLine Hosted ASP Model was 70 locations for Southwestern Bell Communications in the Houston, San Antonio and Austin areas.  In 1996, bandwidth was an issue for most retailers, but SBC put a T1 line in all locations.  Problem solved.

We were a bleeding edge technology and SBC was a no-fear company moving into retail.  We both learned a lot from the venture: SBC did not like retail and ProphetLine had a tough time getting traction in the hosted model environment because of the many security and downtime objections retailers had.

We licked our wounds and returned to our flagship product, which had won four Retail Developer of the Year awards and was as solid as a rock.  We knew that security and location of a retailer’s data was always going to be an issue and mobility was essential.

The security of an in-store database and the convenience of mobility is our product model.

ProphetLine Secure and Mobile POS Software features:

Networked workstations that can go off-site and re-sync to the server.
In-store tablets or laptops running Windows 7 or 8.
Secure FTP multi-store communications.
Built-in Web Shopping Cart
Web-based gift card and loyalty card programs.
iPhone, Android and Windows Phone access to company data.
PCI DSS secure Internet credit and debit card processing.

ProphetLine for Windows is rock solid, robust, mobile and secure.

ProphetLine stored and transmitted data securely before it was a requirement. Security you can trust.

ProphetLine’s ‘offline’ mode and tablet friendliness make mobility a built in function, not a feature you have to pay extra to have. Mobility you deserve.

ProphetLine: mobility and security, because you deserve it.
